Mindfulness app - from idea to screens
Overview
Zen Nook is a navigation- and content-based app that helps you discover serene, hidden city nooks to take a mindful break from your daily routine. The app then suggests curated meditation tracks or music to enhance your experience in the nook. This is a personal project I completed during my UX/UI studies.
I came up with the initial idea, researched competitors, refined the product positioning, and designed the user experience (UX) using design thinking. I iterated the design after encountering a challenge with the user flow. I then created wireframes, developed the final UI, and completed the branding.
When you're stressed or anxious, you want to calm down as quickly as possible. Our day-to-day lives can be hectic, and the need for immediate stress relief is increasing. However, even when we carve out time for mindfulness, it can be difficult to fully engage.
Many mindfulness apps either offer too limited or overly broad content, often poorly categorized, which leads to lengthy and frustrating user flows. This disconnect between the user's need and the app's design sometimes results in the app being abandoned altogether.
In Zen Nook, I prioritized clear categorization based on the user's current status or mood, making the experience more intuitive and tailored. The navigation feature, which maps quiet spots across the city pinned by other users as ideal for meditation, provides a practical solution for immediate stress relief. By encouraging users to take a proper break in a secluded nook, the app helps them make time for themselves, fostering more effective and meaningful meditation sessions that benefit mental health.
Additionally, I designed a calm, minimalist UI to alleviate stress from the moment the user opens the app.
Today, as I browse through meditation apps on my phone, I often find myself wishing Zen Nook actually existed. Figuring out the right user flow with limited user research was a significant challenge that I’m still not entirely confident I overcame. However, this experience pushed me to be imaginative and resourceful, using design thinking to bring my vision to life. I hope that other users would find value in this solution too.
